I hold people to higher standards of behavior than I do livestock. It's a failing of mine.
Situation: A crowd of shoppers who are extremely interested in low prices remove the front doors of a Wal*Mart from their hinges, stampede in, crush an employee to death and several other people to injury, then, when asked to leave the store and its wonderful savings so that the EMTs can do their jobs, refuse to do so.

Claim: The shoppers are the innocent victims.

Many people are claiming that, actually.

For the story of how an out of control mob of enraged bargain seekers tore the doors off of a Wal-Mart in Long Island, stormed the building, and in the process stomped a store worker to death, as well as put four other people in the hospital, check here: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/11/28/2008-11-28_worker_dies_at_long_island_walmart_after.html?page=0

Full disclosure: I am the hctomorrow you'll see in comments. I eventually gave up trying to reason with these... people. Nausea and mental fatigue are normal symptoms of reading that thread. Please be advised.

I haven't been able to bring myself to actually go back to that cesspit after I left. I'm sure the, ahem, high quality of the discussion continued apace, however.

I guess I should say, one person claimed they were absolutely innocent victims, and many others said that the store was largely, or almost entirely, to blame.

Or Bush.

Or the economy.

Or the desire to get toys for their kids.

Basically, that they were the victims, and largely, if not entirely, free of blame.

Bullshite. If I remember correctly, this was always happening, even when the economy was in great shape and Bush wasn't doing anything stupid.

There were always deaths by trampling in line for sales. It's really fucking scary.

I'm glad the Sprawl*Mart stores here are open 24/7. If they weren't, I'm sure you'd be having small thermonuclear WARS in line, this being Miami and all, where I've been rammed in traffic for not starting out within the first 0.5 seconds after a green light.
